As the Sun Sets (scene)

INT. BEDROOM. MAUREEN’S HOUSE — DAY

Emma stares in shock for several seconds around her childhood bedroom. It has been redecorated into what was obviously intended to be a nursery, complete with crib, changing table, and padded rocking chair. The walls are painted rose-colored, and absolutely everything is pink, purple, or white.

EMMA You changed my room into a nursery.

MAUREEN

(nervous) It’s cute, isn’t it?

EMMA Mom —

MAUREEN

I know it’s a bit silly to go so overboard with the pink, but you know, girls run in our family —

EMMA Mom.

MAUREEN Yes, dear?

EMMA Have you lost your mind?

MAUREEN Well, you know, there’s no need to get upset about it. It’s just in case.

EMMA Just in case of what? I’m thirty-six, jobless, single, and I just moved back in with my mother. I think the baby boat has sailed, Mom.

MAUREEN You never know. God works in mysterious ways.

EMMA Mary was a virgin, Mom.

MAUREEN Emma!

EMMA

I’ve told you I don’t want to have kids. I don’t have room for kids in my life.

MAUREEN But I thought, you know, you might have changed your mind.

EMMA Since I got my IUD six months ago?

MAUREEN

They can be removed, can’t they?

EMMA Are you crazy?

MAUREEN Don’t you dare!

EMMA (startled)

Sorry?

MAUREEN Do not call me crazy! I just — I just want to see you have your own child, your own life.

EMMA I don’t have to be a parent to have a fulfilling life.

MAUREEN But it makes it so much better.

EMMA

I cannot be having this conversation with you. I’m going to go find the air mattress, since you replaced my bed with a crib for my imaginary future baby.

Emma stalks out, leaving Maureen looking sad and wistful.
